Also, a lot of people simply don't have access to 3 phase. All of that said, the HF mini mill is still the absolute bottom of the bucket. If you can afford to go up a step, look at the 25 size bench top mills like the G0704 or the PM25. I have a G0704 and used it manually for a year before converting it to CNC.

First image below. Here is the 4" regular vise (without swivel base) and the 5" tilting sideby side. The 4" vise's swivel base lifts it up maybe another inches. There is a 12inch ruler leaned against the drill chuck, and this is to show a common problem. The mill's head is raised as high as it will go.

From what I've read, the mini mill would most likely have less runout/wobble issues than a drill press. I could use it to make metal (and wooden) parts for jigs, tool accessories, and whatever else. I prefer the variable speed opposed to changing belt positions in a press. I've also seen an adapter that can attach a router motor to the mini mill.

If i am spending more than that i am buying a REAL mill, used, from a wide assortment of places. If i am buying a mill larger than that and i will be getting a full size mill, not a halfway inbetween. Small, benchtop mill.

The typical Sieg X2 minimill [HF 44991, Grizzly G8689, MicroMark others] has a lot of backlash in the my case it was .053inches, which was almost a full turn of the fineadjust knob. I heard that putting a shim behind the rack on the column would help by causing it to mesh tighter with the pinion gear in the head.

Step 2: Fabrication. I made the toolpath using Fusion360 and have attached a step file of just the frame laid out flat as well as the .f3d file with the CAM for the tools I used. Jan 14, 2014. #1. I am thinking about buying a minimill. I would like to stay under 1,, if at all possible. I have looked online and it seems feasible, except for all the accessories you may need. I am, at best, a parttime maker (maybe 30 knives per year). I do not need a huge machine or a really complicated machine.
